FFG Government Ministers caught again

That is some compo gravy train, pity Leo didn't follow through and knock it on the head. 5000 claims yet 1600 victims.

Where are you getting the 5000 claims and 1600 victims from?

The courts in this country should be dealing very sternly with bogus claims. Fine the claimant and warn their legal team not to be party to fraudulent claims.

The link you posted from NT

"More than 1,600 people got hepatitis C from the transfusions provided by the state's health service and to date more than 300 have died as a result"

"There have been around 5,000 claims from victims and their relatives so far.

According to the memorandum, the tribunal cost €1.086 billion by the end of 2013 and would likely cost another €1.23 billion thereafter."

The State has to protect the State and its finances as advice from the Attorney General dictates.

If Mary Lou was in office she would be doing the exact same.

Otherwise there would be a queue from Government Buildings back as far as the Red Cow roundabout for cheques for every single claim.

Presumably some of those cases for compensation relate to breadwinners dying or having been affected, so I could see how it could be more than just the 1600 cases of those directly infected. But 5,000 claims from 1,600 infections does seem to be a very large amount alright.

Seems an inordinate amount spent on the Tribunal compared to the (presumably) compensation paid afterwards. Nearly as much :(

The Hep C tragedy created lots of victims. Someone who may have died as a result of being given a blood transfusion contaminated with Hepatitis may have left children behind who rightly sought legal redress.

In the US, blood donors are paid for giving blood. Now let's consider for a moment the kinds of people who are so desperate for money that they would resort to selling their blood.
And Ireland imported that and injected it into Haemophiliacs.

The State has to protect the people of the State.

Trying to wash their hands of paying compensation to those who were adversely affected by the appointees of the state is not protecting the people of the state. It's the likes of you pulling up the ladder with "I am not affected so don't pay them"

Genuine claims should be paid. Fraudulent claims should be prosecuted and the legal teams involved in fraudulent claims should be yellow carded and warned as to their future behaviour.

As for the Attorney General "dictates" - if it's a diktat then there should be no problem publishing his/her findings. They're employed by the State to give legal advice to the "State" so let the people of the state hear the wisdom of their advice.

Which is the case in reality.

How can you pursue a citizen for a "fraudulent" claim when that might not have been conclusively proved?

The person may have been misinformed at to their entitlements and innocently pursued a claim.

Punishing their legal team might also be a little bit Soviet.

The State will defend itself.

You are a full-time employee of the State so please do inform us as to how this works?

I can guarantee you that no individual or organisation cannot just arrive up to your department and demand payment.

How many people lost their homes, their savings, their pensions?
