Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Tks for reply ,was wondering it was the JP trope ok . Anyway for reference Jp has been sponsoring limerick in both codes now for a long time, also locally in club scene. If the gaa was looking after him surely they would have thrown us a few football all stars too . No doubt journos are influenced but they I hope have their own minds too.in my own opinion as I already said I thought quaid and hayes were nailed on to win and the other two were in contention, hegarthy was the big surprise I guess to most in limerick as many would have put aaron gillane ahead of him in performance this year.
Correct! JP has been sponsoring Limerick a long time and he's sponsoring the GAA also to the tune of at least 32 million last year so why wouldn't they look after Limerick. If Limerick got 2 All Stars this year which you state was deserving we wouldn't even be exchanging posts on the subject. If the journalists had their own mind then they wouldn't be influenced, it's not a two way issue but it is an issue with the media regarding the GAA always, same by the way regarding RTE, Church and State.

Limerick footballers are not in the picture while they are so far away from being competitive not to mind successful.

For me North Cork states it in a nutshell regarding Limerick's preformances in Munster this year but they made history.

I have no time for the All-Stars but I believe most inter-county players would like to have at least one but the dogs on the street know the titles and medals are what it's really about. The All Stars and titles have one thing in common though as they are both politically related.

As I stated before JP and Limerick are not the problem, the G.A.A. is the problem.

Fair enough point of view ,will agree to disagree though. I will say though the all stars are always contentious ,most years there are selections that probably baffle many. I remember brian whelahan winning player of the match once in an all ireland final and he didn't win an all star and there are many others who probably should have won one and didn't over the years.
As you say yourself though the ultimate is the all ireland medal ,Mike casey has been a stalwart of the Limerick FB line for years and has never won one but I'd say he's happy with 5 all ireland medals.

The Brian Whelehan fiasco was disgraceful. The RTE Sunday Game 40th Anniversary team was another farce in leaving out the likes of JJ Delaney, John Fenton and JBM.

It was worse than that. He won Hurler of the Year but didn't get an All-Star in 1994. Truly bizarre.

The Whelahan snub, the red card rule and a power grab gone wrong - the five biggest All-Stars controversies

No room for Huler of the Year

Having played a big role in Offaly’s All-Ireland success in 1994, there were few dissenting voices when Brian Whelahan was chosen as Hurler of the Year. Yet, as a result of a classic howler in the selection system that prevailed that year, he missed out on an All-Star award.
In an attempt to prevent ‘leaks’ and have the hurling 15 announced ‘live’ on RTÉ’s coverage of All-Star night, the team was chosen by secret ballot. Whelahan(pictured) and Limerick’s David Clarke were the two prime candidates for the wing-back positions, but since both had played on the right, one of them would have to be considered for No 7.
Clarke won the right-half vote, with many of those who supported him doing so on the basis that Whelahan, who was considered more versatile, would win on the other wing. However, those who voted for Whelahan on the right obviously didn’t back him for No 7. It left him short in both positions and his Offaly colleague Kevin Martin took the left-half slot.

Whelahan would have beaten either Clarke or Martin on an individual basis but because of the voting system that applied, he lost out. And since it happened in a secret ballot, it wasn’t possible to re-open the debate when it emerged that the country’s top hurler that year wasn’t going to be included. It was, without doubt, the biggest selection cock-up in All-Star history.

To add Davy Clarke in his own right was a class half back and we were delightful he won .
