Cork Hurlers - Part 2

how were Limerick caught on the hop?
I think it was more a stubborn refusal to adapt.
It didnt work ve Clare because our defenders followed thir opponents while limerick try to stay in position and fill the spaces with structure.
Corks puck outs and 3 inside got them into the spaces between the structure and limericks lack of pace did the rest.

Clares starting 15 is marginally faster than corks despite the lack of conversation about it and the endless shiteing on about corks pace in the build up so when it was man for man and footraces cork had problems.

Cork are not slow, far from it but Clare have one of the fastest squads in the game and that was important in the final
I think our management also have questions to answer , areas to improve.
For instance I would like to know their thinking on how Patrick Horgan was used in the final. A player that was carrying an injury and still stayed on the pitch long after some younger players even though his contribution was minimal.

Regarding pace then I think the pace of O Mahony, Fitzgibbon, Barrett, Connolly and Hayes is the match of any other set of midfielders and forwards and that doesn't even include O'Connor and Power.

Clare are a much older and far more experienced team than Cork. Clare have a record of losing important games in recent years that would be hard to match. They will have learned a lot from these defeats over recent years. They have a team starting eight players over thirty compared to two for Cork.

Cork will learn from defeat but it is how they react next season is what we must all wait and see.

And why JOC was the second perma sub on when he had done nothing all year.

From an outside point of view, cannot for the life of me understand why lehane wasn't used in final as sub unless he wasn't fully fit then again some were supposedly on the field from start not fully fit.

I do believe that in 2025 Clare with the All Ireland title in the bag will be a more difficult opponent for Limerick.
I think that win will help remove some of the doubts that existed in Clare minds when playing Limerick.

That said, I don't think Clare are good enough to get back to back titles.
theres a lot of truth to that
Clare and limerick have been very difficult opponents for each other for historical reasons over the last 50 years due largely to the sort of combined population.
There is no doubt however that limerick have a distinct grip on our heads in munster finals.

I would quibble with the final statement.
I think we are good enough to go back to back when you factor in the performances of the lads coming off the bench in the final and the under 20s over the last 3 years.
we also have one other slightly under the radar thing going on
from our 26 v cork only Adam Hogan Eibhear quilligan and Seadna Morey are playing in the senior final and Daragh Lohan, Aaron Shanagher and rory Hayes in the intermediate final. All the rest of them either finished last weekend or over the last 4 weeks so they are already resting.
Diarmuid ryan and Aidan mcCarthy are the only two playing football afaik.
I would agree though that its highly unlikely we will get all the breaks necessary to get the job done. The competition is too fierce and we are not the best team of all time as limerick are regardless of what they achieve from here

O Mahony isnt quick
Connolly and Hayes are mobile and not restricted by pace but no defender is afraid of their speed.

Fitzgibbon and barrett are the only two fast cork players up front until the cavalry come off the bench

as regards the age thats very true.
the starting team has a lot of mature players in it which helped enormously
30
21 30 22
25 34 32
32 31
31 23 28
30 24 31

the subs that played
22, 23, 28, 31, 27, 31,22 ,23

we definitely have a rebuild to do soon but i think we have the players to do it.

Clare will certainly qualify from Munster as they have 2 home games neither vs limerick and if someone else beats limerick in a semi final they could well do back to back, obviously if they have to play limerick jn a knock out game it’s curtains.

Would have far less confidence in cork, serious questions about defence including captain, the use of subs in the final was awful, O’Connor had zero form for a few years and Kingston was terrible since the limerick game, neither could win any ball.
Huge chance badly blown and if it’s same as you are lads and no real new competition in the squad it’ll be very dissappointong, if it’s the usual with the league which is we don’t give a fuck there’s no fucking point in giving the likes of lehane every single game, it needs to be number 26- 30odd who should be playing league games with a good mix of more seasoned players

I agree junior, to see Conor Lehane and Padraig Power left on the bench in the final was not just a mistake, it was criminal, especially when you see who came on instead. And the one real ball winning option on the panel, Sean Twomey, was disregarded after the opening game. How we could have done with someone like him at 12 with 29 minutes to go in the final. Management need to up their game here

As regards improving our team, we do have a problem, in that most of the obvious guys to break into the team, Ethan, Padraig Power and Robbie O Flynn are midfielders or fowards while we have still some serious issues at the back. Joyce, Eoin & Rob Downey are nailed on starters but we either need serious improvement from the other 3 or we need replacements. I think we’ll revert to a TOM, Joyce and Rob half back line next year which may settle things down for us, hopefully.

For the league, we need to give the likes of Conor O Callaghan and Eoin Roche a proper go at corner back it’s a year or two too soon for Kevin Lyons who I think will be a fabulous player for us

Ethan needs to start in most league games and he will be our anchor for the next decade, try Mark Coleman, Brian Roche, Tommy O Connell next to him and possibly Michael Mullins too

I’m really excited by our options up front, as I said Padraig Power and Robbie O Flynn need to get loads of game time, Diarmuid Healy and Ben Cunningham must be tried wing foward and Darragh Fitz could be tried up there too

I’m looking foward to next year already
