Cork Hurlers - Part 2

I looked at a full recording of the Cork v KK AI Final in 1966, recently.

I was shocked at the poor standard of hurling. The free taking was abysmal - some woeful misses. Even Eddie Keher failed to lift the ball properly when going for goal from a 21 yrd free late on.

Justin McCarthy, Gerald and Seanie Barry looked decent hurlers for Cork but some looked very average. Colm Sheehan got 3 goals but looked like a Junior Player and was pretty lucky for all 3 scrappy goals. Paddy Barry in goals was Cork's best player, by far. Ollie Walsh was very good in goal for KK.

Charlie McCarthy who would go on to become one of our most skilful ever corner forwards looked very average with poor control.

Cork were fortunate to win - 3 soft goals and KK only scored a goal when the game was effectively over. Missed a few good goal chances.

A huge amount of ground hurling with very poor striking.

It looked like they had very little training or coaching and very little concentration on basic skills.

The difference between the modern game and the game back then is mind boggling. The sliotar was probably very heavy and maybe made a huge difference.

Well wort a look
Christ...Justin,Gerald and Seanie Barry were three of the greatest ever to line out for us.Decent.! Wish we had their likes now.

People tend to look back at the old days with misty eyed nostalgia, If you were to believe John Horgan in the echo every match between
the big 3 in cork in the 70s was an absolute classic,

Tougher men and matches back then.
Sissy games now mostly...we didn't give away a single fu.king free in second half v Clare.A poor Clare team of old lads.
Ffs.Did we break a hurley.

Hurling definitely improved well after 1966 but it's gone back now mainly because it is a very different game played with a tennis ball prototype based on how rugby and soccer is coached & played, regular rule changing and poor officiating. From a Cork point of view alone when one compares the array of striking from Tom Cashman and John Fenton we will never see again. We all know John Fenton's goal is special but it is sad to think that a goal from a ground stroke like the one Ray Cummins scored in the 1980 League final v Limerick is very unlikely to be ever seen again along with the striking of the two aforementioned players.

Just watched the "square ball" with Hoggie. First off that Dave McIntyre is a knob, he has a borderline arrogance that leads to negative questions. On Hoggie, as always, speaks from the heart. He was very complimentary to Clare and said they were deserving winners, he didn't harp on about Johnny Murphy and his decision making but acknowledged that they should of had a free at the end. What I can't get over is the fact that Hoggie played the game with a torn hamstring, how can anyone sprint with that? Should Hoggie of played??
They also made the point that 82,000 people and thousands more season rests in the hands of an Unfit referee( i added the unfit part), his club team of umpires. How crazy is that, the fastest field sport in the world and your season hinges on Johnny and his crew. This is not just for Cork but the wider GAA, Trial 2 refs per game ( each side) do not allow an umpire affiliate, Umpires from different counties to participate. Remove the time management from the referee, additional time for stoppage/injuries etc. that should be a role for someone else. It is a thankless job, I get that but the fact so many games are refereed differently is not on. Clare vs wexford and red card for Rory O Connor would nearly of gotten a gold star in the AI final. Players and fans commit too much money and emotion for the game not to evolve. Stay away from VAR and the likes and tackle this with common sense. Another example, two munster teams playing in a final, no Munster referee. Is is that hard?

I saw Justin and Gerald quite a few times and they were exceptional hurlers. Barry was rated very highly also.

That's why I was surprised that they didn't stand out as all time greats then. Gerald was the best I ever saw to double in the air

Maybe nervous as they were under big pressure

Refereeing in general this year was brutal. Tipp were absolutely screwed in first half v Waterford in Walsh Park. The cahalane sending off for us there was a joke even if Waterford definitely deserved to beat us. The non goal for us v tipp and limerick...the list is endless...I'm sure other counties have other such complaints but they don't even themselves out which is the common mantra Thing is if they were borderline you'd say fair enough but some are so clear cut it's criminal.
