Cork Hurlers - Part 2

He really isn't unlucky

Opinions vary here but it appears you didn't see Cork v Tipp. O'Connell was excellent at mid-field in the early stages and was the main man in Cork being well on top of Tipp only for squandered chances but he was put back wing-back when there was a blood sub and when Eoin Downey struggled. The management have made him the fall guy and why would one assign any rookie to mark Tony Kelly in a position he has only played in under this management? A natural defender like Ger Millerick is required for Kelly, Tommy is a half-forward/mid-fielder. Square pegs don't fit in round holes. His form all year has been better than Shane and Darragh and they both start tomorrow.

He's not an inter-county half-back & has suffered from being played out of position.

Would agree he’s shown all year that defending under a high ball is not his strength and he’s been targeted repeatedly by the opposition

Tommy looks the makings of a great midfielder once there are a few stronger options for half back line. He brings great heart, drive and excellent distribution so he’s definitely got a place in the first 15 once the “new team” settles down. This year was always going to be a transition year with a few excellent guys in the latter stages of their career

He’s could be a grittier version of Meade in midfield one day.
