cork airport to go (temporarily) BANG!

The problem with that is transatlantic flights from Cork would be in direct competition with already established flights from Shannon. Shannon has pre-clearance. And while Shannon has lower passenger numbers than Cork it has one ace up its sleeve. It has the longest runway in the Country. 777s and A330s cannot take off or land in Cork.
A 777 did take off from a runway in Dumplin heading to the US, that runway is 500 meters shorter than the main Cork one.

Something technical about the design of the wings i believe

If there was established flights to the East Coast of America, I'd be shocked if pre clearance wasn't brought in at Cork. If there's an agreement between both countries, it would be stupid not to.
Shannon may have the longest runway in Ireland, but the aircrafts airlines are currently using for transatlantic are no bigger than a A321 neo and 757.

You are correct, however Shannon is down as one of those emergency landing airports for planes of any size going across the North Atlantic.

If we got US flights there probably wouldn't be more than one or two a day. Would there be much point in stationing Homeland Security in Cork for the sake of a few hours work a day

Shannon has it. And I think over the winter period, all they have is one flight a day to Boston.

I think people would be happy to use a direct flight out of Cork even without pre clearance. If it does well and sticks around as an all year round route or routes, I'd be shocked if pre clearance didn't come in. You'd have politicians and the business sector lobbying like mad for it.

It's an amazing facility to have.

I know people who'd fly through Dublin rather than take a direct flight, just for the preclearance
