Autism

Window dressing, as they say in politics.

McEntee is a martyr for this carry on.
Thinking of it, I don't think I've ever heard a journalist point this out/question them on this.

The 12 year old kid, Cara Doherty, who met Simon Harris last week seems to have had a better grasp of this than most of our media, as she was, IIRC, asking them to implement something they'd either legislated for or committed to, and hadn't done.

Harris also, wouldn't commit to it.

Edit: Checked it, and it's actually a prime example of this carry on.

"Under legislation, the HSE must carry out an assessment of needs on autistic children within six months of their application – but waiting lists are between three and five years."

Very true,my nieces fella found it difficult for ages, but as soon as he started school up in Mayfield everything fell into place,
Went from total non verbal to looking at us, kissing occasionally,
Sometimes he catches my hand and directs me out ?
The fecker
They've increased some medication and he's calmer, but doesn't sleep much,
Lucky boy he's got great parents who generally have tremendous patience ?
Shower and classroom are the latest words
Yes it's fantastic when they show that response, my wife worked with a lad last year that was non verbal at the start of the year, but by the end he wouldn't shut up ! ? He's a really bright kid and will definitely end up doing something in Tech (he is usually called upon by the teachers to fix stuff !), but the help he's getting now will bring him in on in other areas.

TBH it's brilliant for my wife too, having worked in industry for so many years, she has a happy face coming in at the end of the day, rather than the stress she had in her last job. The money is fairly poor but the job satisfaction is A1.

Two weeks ago our fella started secondary school We were a bag of nerves leading up to it but he has settled very well, He is entitled to a taxi
but there is an issue around securing a provider and escort so we said we would go with the school bus, He is enjoying that , A girl
living behind us knocks every morning and off they walk down to get the bus, He has re connected with a few lads he had lost touch with in the last year or
so, Homework will be a challenge but we can only run with the positives for now,

A friend of mine is an SNA, she says she often has a word with parents and advises them that they should get their kid assessed, A lot of the time they just brush it off, Ah he is grand just a bit hyper,
Yes, that's a very common occurrence, and understandable as the parent wants what they think is best for the child, without accepting or understanding the stage the child is at. Most want their child to be treated the exact same as the mainstream child, when the ASD unit would better suit their needs, or would insist on the child doing honours etc, and it might not be the best path.

SNAs do a great job..mostly.
However very few have any qualification to make the call re having a child assessed.

Can you have autistic traits but not be quite autistic? I know there's Asperger's but that is just a form of autism.
But can you not be on the spectrum at all but not be too far off?

Plenty of people have said I have Asperger's, and even more have called me a weird fucking cunt. But honestly I don't think I'm on the spectrum. I'm just ever so slightly eccentric lol.

Autism is measured on a scale, so the answer to your questions is yes you can have some autistic traits and not others.

Good news Jimmy

My one was diagnosed with ASD officially this summer and has been a long and frustrating journey for us all. She’s in senior infants now ECCE and the school have been fantastic
They even got support for her in the class under AIMS.
She has some good days and other days very bad. We just go on.

I might be possibly undiagnosed ASD also.
A counsellor and GP mentioned it, might look into that for a future diagnosis. But it’s not cheap
