Arab Strap 1995-2006
It was announced this week that Arab Strap are splitting up after playing and recording music together for over ten years. This was sad news for me as they have been one of our biggest inspirations and closest friends ever since our band and theirs started out. I first heard them while we were recording Summer in Hamilton with Paul Savage and remember being so impressed that i can honestly say i was jealous. Their first album is utterly impeccable. Malcolm and Aiden came to one of our shows that we were putting on ourselves at Nice and Sleazy and tried to get in for nothing, i told them that i had paid to get into their first gig at King Tuts a few weeks later and made them pay. I was lying through my teeth, i got into their gig for nothing but we needed the money. From then on in we've played together countless times and their records have truthfully been some of finest to ever come out of Scotland. I don't want to sound too morbid as they're not moving to New Zealand and haven't been killed by a stingray and am sure will continue to make amazing records individually but i suppose its just a shame when a great band calls it a day. They are doing a final tour next month, go and see them. They are magic. Stuart Braithwaite
