Cork Footballers

Someone mentioned Seán O'Donoghue. A fine footballer at u21 level and could have been a Cork Senior footballer if he choose. But he was never going to pick football over hurling. So all the time and resources invested in him by football and all the games he played for Cork in football, in one way was wasted when you could have had a dedicated footballer who might have been less talented but who would develop in time. This exact issue has dogged Cork football for a few years. Could list off dozens of players who played Minor/U21 football for Cork who were predominantly hurlers and jumped ship when hurling came calling. Nothing against themselves making a choice or hurling picking them either to be fair - it's up to football side to get their house in order and figure out where allegiances lie with a player by the time he's 18 at a minimum.
This is the crux of the problem of being a dual county.
Every county will have players being lost to other activities on the odd occasion- Aussie Rules, Athletics, Soccer, Rugby, etc. but 95% of those on football counties' underage teams and development squads have gaelic football as their first choice sport 5 years later.
In Cork, a large % of those on football development squads end up having hurling as their first choice sport 5 years later and soccer will take a higher % than most other counties with 2 LOI clubs snapping up players for their academy.

So on top of losing these talented gaelic footballers, a large % of dedicated young gaelic footballers in Cork miss out on all the benefits of development squads because of these defectees.

Must be soul destroying for some of these coaches to put all this work into someone who has no real interest in gaelic football in the long term

It would be nice if some of the solely hurling folk could row in behind the rebel footballers now that we are out of that but no doubt some will don the colours of Kerry and Mayo instead.

Superb post

Cleary is not going to bring in a hurler to a football Squad mid championship and completely disrupt a set up. Anyone who saw Hayes Sunday knows that he is well able for IC hurling and will develop into a fine Hurler.

Highwayman is correct it would be wrong to bring Hayes into the squad now as there is no time to intergrate him into the panel with 2 games in a fortnight coming up. What we have we will have to do with and hope we avoid anymore injuries.
