Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Agreed. There lots in the group who need to be nurtured and developed over time and it’s going to take longer than fitting a few of them in during one league season to do it.

It’s silly season around here on the back of our under 20 wins where lads can’t see that that success doesn’t always translate beyond to senior. A team won the county here for the first time in a long time and some fellas would have ya believe 6 or 7 of em should be starting. Outside of TOC I don’t think any of our new lads have set the world alight. E Downey had done well but imagine Seamus Callinan licking his lips walking in to meet him at the edge of the square.

We will be as hard pushed as anyone to get out of Munster this year. It went to the wire last year and I expect the same this year. I was watching Clare today and thinking about the disrespect we show them. Every year we take it we should roll over them but they’ve being putting in serious performances over the last few years.
That’s the most ridiculous statement I’ve read on here in a while. No one in their right mind is saying that 🙄

Hopefully we get some game time into some of the regulars next few weeks. Think TOC has put his hand up and even though DD was not as efficient today, he is a starter for me. Power was a big plus and Brian Roche is locked in now for midfield with DF.

Think Conor Cahalane has played himself off the panel after today, he’s a guy who needed a big performance and he was poor. Lots of them were but he needed something.

Just watched the game back there, awful performance by Cork, was like watching the team under Kingston trying to walk the ball up the field, only for Wexford injuries and Seamie Harnedy we would have been bate out the gate. Backs apart from Joyce and Tommy O'Connell were awful, midfield overplayed the ball all day, fucking about doing nothing constructive. P Power and Barrett were the pick of the forwards until Harnedy came on and showed the whole lot of them how to actually compete for the ball and win it.

If Pat Ryan does one thing this year is sort out the wheat from the chaff with regard to what we have from midfield up, they need to be sat down and told if you can't compete and win your own ball then you have no business playing inter county hurling. We have too many guys not willing to get hurt gaining possession and to do the unglamorous stuff. About four of the forwards starting today didn't want to know about it, running away from work. Kingston getting motm sums it up. He offered fuck all from open play bar frees, unable to win any type of ball and just waiting for fellas to do it for him. Jack O'Connor should ride pine for the rest of the year. Lazy fucking half arsed tackling conceding brainless yellow cards, it's not his first time either. There is a long job of work ahead for Pat Ryan and his team, I would temper expectations for the championship this year and work on sorting a squad out for next year and give guys workings for their game before they pull on a red jersey again.

We really got out of jail today, we were sloppy and lethargic for about 55 minutes and thundered into the game in the last 15! minutes and got away with it.

We were obsessed with short passes today, a trait that I thought we got rid of, it was ridiculous the amount of hospital passes we tried to play in defence. If we persist with that we will have a very short summer.

No excuses but we don’t know what training has been done for the last few weeks but I suspect we are just coming out of a very heavy training block. That’s certainly what it looked like. If not I’d be really worried

What the fcuk is our goalie at coming out as a spare man when the danger is still there. Some on here are lauding him for his spectacular recovery but he should never have left his line. More sloppiness

Did someone say Shane Kingston got man of the match? You’re shitting me surely? He barely hit a ball all day, no less than a lot of others but man of the match? I’d have given it to Paudie Power or Seamus Harnedy, no one else deserved it

Not one player stood out today, not one, to me Eoin Downey, Ciaran Joyce, Tommy O Connell, Declan Dalton, Shane Barrett and Paudie Power were the best of the starters with Seamus Harnedy and Robert Downey the pick of the subs.

That doesn’t mean the other fellas should be written off or anything but some have dropped down the pecking order and things are going to get serious from here on in.

We have Clare next weekend in a dead rubber and a league semi final the following weekend against probably Waterford or Kilkenny. If players are going to start against Waterford in championship they are going to have to perform from now on in, and I include the returning older players in that. To start someone in championship who hasn’t struck a ball for you would be some gamble to take no matter how much experience they have.

But Seamus showed today the value of older experienced players who are prepared to work hard and fight for the ball. Others have yet to show if they can or not.

Team for Clare

Ger Collins
Niall O Leary Daire O Leary Eoin Downey
Cormac O Brien Tommy O Connell Robert Downey
Ciaran Joyce Brian Roche
Declan Dalton Conor Cahalane Seamus Harnedy
Alan Cadogan.Paudie Power Shane Barrett

I’m presuming anyone not fit enough for the bench this week won’t be fit enough to start next week

Personally I don’t think Ciaran Joyce and Tommy O Connell should both start half back as they both like the free role of 6. Now is the time to look at Joyce midfield as we need a driving force in there going foward so let’s look at Tommy at 6
Moving Joyce is pure madness.

Perhaps pull out of Munster altogether and train for next year.

Wexford lost some key players to injury during the game. Our puckouts remain poor. Watching today you’d expect to see a fit Tim O Mahony in midfield or half forward. Damien Cahalane on the wing.
