Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Eoin Cadogan is after announcing that he is retiring from Intercounty Hurling. A true warrior for Cork over the last 15 years. A top class dual star who gave it his all for the Rebel County. Best of luck to him in his retirement.
Did he officially retire from the football so or is he leaving that door open if he's only retiring from hurling?

From de paper...
"In a message posted today on his social media accounts, Cadogan said that “after careful consideration and reflection” he had decided the time is right to end his inter-county career. He did not specify whether he intends to continue playing hurling, and football, for Douglas."

Is that a joke? He’d barely make the Douglas team never mind the Cork football team.

From a football perspective Cads was an excellent defender from around 2008-12….strong, fast, lacking ball skills but a great man marker. He hasn’t been a good enough footballer to be a cork footballer for 7/8 years at least. The causal football observer would probably have told you he was a fierce loss to the footballers, in reality its a different story.

Can’t speak as confidently as to his ability as a hurler but for me he was overrated as a footballer, was never in the same class as someone like Shieldsy. Great servant to Cork Gaa nonetheless.

No joke, just interesting he said in his first paragraph he was retiring from intercounty hurling, instead of intercounty.

The period you refer to above was also good for Shieldsy but if Cads was excellent then how could he have been never in Shieldsy's class? I recall Shieldsy receiving a few roastings in the 2007 U-21 Championship which Cork won whereas Cads held his own.

Point being made is that there is a perception amongst casual observers that Cadogan would be considered a great footballer, ie up there with Canty, Lynch, Shields. The truth of it is that he’s never been at that level and wasn’t any great loss to the footballers in the past 5 years.

Tell any of the lads who’ve played with both that Cadogan is as good/better than Shieldsy and I guarantee they’ll laugh in your face.

Really decent player for a period, yes, committed servant to Cork Gaa, gan dabht. Huge kudos to him for both, but by the general public he was overrated and overestimated at times.

We will have to agree to disagree here because firstly I wouldn't rate Shieldsy up there with Lynch & Canty and secondly Cads was punished for being a dual player, a prime example was when he was left out of the team for the late Kieran O'Connor when Ray Carey failed a fitness test before the 2009 AI Football final. We all know the outcome.

Cadogan was a super footballer. If anything is draw to hurling cost him recognition as a top footballer. Same for Aidan Walsh. As hurlers not the main men but as footballers would have been key guys. Damien Cahalane gone down a similar path. Hurling just seen as sexier

Rubbish. Footballers were done after 2010. In fact they were lucky to get there. Probably wouldn't have got over the Kerry mental block in 2010 tbh. After the win was the slow decline and the presence or not of Walsh and or Cadogan made no difference except in the heads of the usual West cork football heads who blame hurling for their inadequacies.

As a footballer he was reasonably good and a hard enough bastard which is what was needed at the time.

Young Footballer of the Year and a prominent member of the defence are obvious losses to the football team. The fact that they often were subs or taken off on the hurlers would show they had less importance to the hurlers than they did to the footballers. It’s blatantly obvious that Cork needs to clearly define if you want to go hurling or playing football from a young age and forgot about the dual player at any age group
