I'm coming to Cork

My Gr-gr-Grandfather left Cork 1819.

I want to see the land he came from.

What to do.. where to go?

I want to experience Cork.
I only have a week in May so I'll be cramming.

Is there a great Pub I shouldn't miss ?

Is there a favorite hotel?

A site I shouldn't miss?
I am interested in Archaeology.

I appreciate your input.

What he said...although I'm biased as I'm from there. Heaven on Earth.

Enjoy your visit. I'm jealous as I don't think I will make it home this year. Next year for definite though.

Take a car and travel from Clonalikty down to Castletownbere travelling out the Bantry and Dunmanus bay roads and the Beara peninsula. This will bring you to the best scenery on offer and almost a trip back in time. Reference archeologial websites to find the best sites in this regard but there are many incl Neolithic stone circles and settlement in Drombeg (near Clon) and http://www.bearatourism.com/archaelogical.html on the Beara peninsula (you might also track down the remains of O'Sullivan Beara's castle in Dunboy...).

p.s. skip Mulligans pub in Cork - its a dive. Try Sin e or Corner House (next to each other).

I'd agree, sin e. Beara is a long trek down in to west cork, not to be missed if you've the time but you say your on a tight schedule. I've just moved from west cork, to east cork, and its fantastic around this area for sights (all sea sights i might add).

as for a hotel, i like the clarion, if you've plenty dough, the 5* hayfield manor at the gates of UCC, i'd suggest a walk of the grounds of Ucc, beautiful and losts of history if you ask.. jacobs on the mall for your dinner, should you have a bank balance to rival Mr.abramovic. Their food is top class.

Do you have anymore info, other than he was from cork, maybe we could be more specific in suggesting places to go/see.

No idea if he was from Cork city or Cork County?
He was a farmer here..so I assume he was a farmer/farm-hand there?

All i know of my ancestor is, his name was Andrew O'Connor born 1802 in Ireland (My father says Cork)
He arrived in Canada about 1819.

I understand there are not many records around for the pre-famine years, so I am dabbbling in dna-genealogy hoping to find a connection some day.

It's like a paternity test. The more numbers you match with someone the closer related you are.

It's interesting to see Ireland's make-up of male lines. Different genetic groups can point to different geographical locations, which hint at your ancient past.

Very cool stuff. Here are some Projects in alphabet order.
Y-dna projects follow direct male lines...and MTdna follows direct female lines.

Anyway..it's a new rage.

Thank-you for your touring ideas.

In the city I would check out:

The Imperial Hotel on the South Mall is a very nice “old world” hotel in the city centre - http://www.flynnhotels.com/Imperial_Hotel/

I would go to a town called Cobh – the port where many emigrants left Ireland for the Americas - http://www.cobhheritage.com/index2.html. Cobh is approx 30 mins drive from City Centre. There is also a commuter train serving the town.

The Jameson Heritage Centre in Midleton in East Cork is worth a visit if you like your whiskey - http://www.jamesonwhiskey.com/Heritage_Midleton_experience_Tour_info.aspx

The Beara peninsula in West Cork is fabulous. The Mizen peninsula is also worth a visit with unique villages such as Glandore, Union Hall, Schull, Ballydehob. Skibbereen town is also worth a visit.

If you are interested in Irish history, when in Clonakilty you should check out the Michael Collins Centre - http://www.michaelcollinscentre.com/.
