Big Fuck Off Estate to be built near Blarney

"Sources within the local authority have indicated this is "a long-term project", with a lifespan of 20 to 25 years and is designed to kick in when the economic recession ends."

That's the important sentence there. It's of no relevance to the today's situation, this is long term planning so as to guide orderly development. It's a pity it wasn't pushed ahead with in the late 90's as it would have saved some of the sprawl of places like Carrigaline.

Cork's satellite towns and suburbs are at their capacity - if anything they need to have their town/village centres to be redeveloped to match the population they now have - Carrigaline again the best example.

Growing a new town over 20 years, in a well planned manner, on a strategic rail route, is a good way to plan for future population growth. Also, it will balance out the city a bit. The south side of the city has grown far more than the north.

This is the type of plan led development we should be welcoming, rather than the developer led "i own 500 acres south of douglas, zone it for me there lads" shit which has destroyed much of the country.

who said we are a one trick pony ! lay the building mania ghost to rest fgs

It's not building mania. Our Cities and big towns are going to keep growing over the next 20 years, that's where population growth be concentrated, we need to plan for it rather than let builder and farmers keep picking off random fields in Ovens, Carrigaline, Blarney, etc. Bishopstown wasn't built in a massive building boom, neither was most of Cork City. But it still grew and grew, and will continue to do so.

People need to separate ghost estates in Leitrim to development in major metropolitan areas.

i agree with what you say but i would think there is a lot more we could do with our existing space rather than ruining another green area

Didn't Coleman Brothers get planning for over 1000 units in Blarney a few years ago?

I remember talk of Blarney/Grenagh becoming a suburb of the city and all the benefits that would bring.

Can't see it ever happening on that scale though.

Correct..T'was Coleman brothers, Flemings Construction that was supposed to be building the majority of it and and a smaller builder also doing a bit also. Doubt that is still the case now obviously with Flemings gone bust..

No chance whatsoever.

No credit available to build it; no credit available to buy the houses anyway.

Big mistake really. A big idea driven by small people in small office. Towns and communities grow from small places into big places by the people that grow them over time.

Making one big mistake like a massive housing estate which it will be leads to a hub of problems that will be unmanageable in the short to long term. Something which could be looked upon in the future as a massive mistake.

It's not impossible to get it right, difficult but not impossible.
