Jack Charlton RIP

🐂💩
Unlucky in 81 but very lucky in November 1987.
You make your own luck.
He was in a position to take advantage of a bit of luck they got. That position was earned. He went on to cement a place at subsequent tournaments.
He got the most out of his players and got them to buy into his philosophy and style.
Its a minimum requirement to forge a formidable team. Which is what he ended up with. Not pretty but damn hard to beat.

🤔
Robbed in Belgium in 1981. Not a case of making your own luck. Gary Mackay got us to Euro 88 don't forget.
"Style"? "Not pretty but pretty effective"! 😂

Charlton was what we needed at that time but to say that that's our footballing identity forever more is off the mark. That style of football thrived for a while in the 80s and 90s but was found out soon after.

We were rubbish at the last two tournaments because the overall standard of player was on a big downslide from the glory days. So, regardless of style of play, we have to produce better players again, and that may or may not be with English clubs as our crutch. Send them to Europe if needs be. If Luxembourg can produce players to play for Dynamo Kiev, surely we can produce better ones to do similar.

That is a bit of stretch isn't it? He was born in Portugal and came through the Metz academy.

Who said that style of play is one we have to keep? We need a team playing with purpose, character and drive and a team that is hard to break down. Small teams like Luxrmbourg and NI sort that out first and thats the foundation for all the rest.

Luxemburg have a good manager. Has got the team playing as a unit and they are on board with his plan and style. Thats the identity we need to keep and that starts and ends with the manager. The standard of player is outside his control but a good manager like Michael O Neill or Luc Holtz cut their cloth accordingly. Ireland have a bluffer who couldnt even make it in Scotland.

Heres what Luc Holtz had to say about NI in 2019
“They are a team that play with heart and fight, they never give up,” Holtz said. “They will test us to our limit and that’s a good thing.

“Northern Ireland have shown in recent games they have a big heart and I want our players to have a big heart.”

We were rubbish at tournaments? At least we were good enough to get there.
Maybe we will match our last drought of 60 odd years pre Charlton.

Alright, fair enough, he's a blow in, but let's say if Luxembourg can have a number of players playing in various leagues, why shouldn't we have better players doing similar?

I'd rather see fellas do what Cullen is doing rather than play in the Championship.

Easier said then done.
England has historically been the destination for young players. The culture, language and geography all suit.
I agree that our young players would benefit more from being exposed to Continental football then the lower leagues but its unlikely to change considering the existing links.

Yeah, that's fair enough but I do think that you need something from a technical perspective these days. You have to be able to build the play to some degree with progressive passing. Ireland copped out of that the other night when they needed to be better and impose themselves, but that's something that can be fixed, which is why I'm not willing to go all in against the current regime.
