Your remote working future

Hybrid of minimum 1-2 days a week in office seems to be where we are going.
Although when that starts is up for grabs.
I think if I had to do 2 I would be ok. I actually don't NEED to be in the office at all to do my job.

That sounds good, same as me. I have no need to be in an office.

My problem is that I actually don't mind working in an office, and don't really want to work at home forever, but my office is located in Dublin.

Work know I don't want to go back to Dublin and I've settled back in well in Cork, so hopefully we can find some balance. Even if I used flexible office space or something in Cork, that would be ideal.

Yea there is a prospect of using office space the company have in Mahon instead of going all the way to the site for me too.........I'd be happier with that - would make my life a lot easier missing the tunnel.

I saw this morning that Bank of Ireland are opening regional hubs especially for people who have relocated or who want to cut down on their commuting times. I think the ideal thing is that more companies start to do this. Surely office space in Tullamore or Navan is cheaper than just paying for loads of space in the middle of Dublin.

I'm confident that my employer will look after me in this regard, they're brilliant to be fair.

Ah so this was a case of them covering their own back as much as anything else, interesting.

To be fair they've been very good. All my home working equipment has been paid for by work. Two laptops, a laptop stand, keyboard, mouse.

You could argue that they should be paying for WiFi, but I'm saving so much money by not commuting and no paying for lunch and lattes every day, that I'll take the small hit.
Two laptops ?

Why would you need two work laptops ?

Why would you need two work laptops?

They sent me out a standard laptop at the beginning of Covid, and a few months later they sent out a special one which had been modified so I can't do anything other than access the work system on it.

They let me keep the first one but I only really use it for Now TV. I'd be afraid of having to give it back some day and them checking the history.

I keep my PROC and PORN activity to my personal devices.

Anyone concerned that some companies could use this as an opportunity to outsource jobs to cheaper economies? If work can be done 100% remotely then why pay Irish wages when you can pay Indian wages? I already know of one person working for a US company that was let go because they moved his department to India.

Very tough to do due to tax implications.

Google for example got a right slap on the wrist early on as they had a number of Dublin employees who went back to France. The French then said that if they're working in France Google should be paying the appropriate taxes in France, so they ordered the staff back to Ireland.

The landlords of the €2k+ Dublin docklands apartments let out a collective sigh of relief when all the high earning international workers arrived back and filled their empty apartment blocks.

It never, or rarely, works out due to different time zones and work cultures.
And somehow they feel even more remote.
