Your remote working future

Where do people see things going with regards to remote and hybrid working? Do you want to go back to the office full time, some off the time etc?

The official line with my crowd at the moment is 3 days in the office a week, but they're being very flexible. Particularly for a role like mine which can be done from anywhere, I'll be pushing for one day a week in the office.

It's very encouraging to see the likes of the below now being put into motion.

From an employer perspective it seems like a no brainer when they can cut down on office space and give people effective pay increases due to lower commuting costs. Not to mention the benefit for the work life balance.

We have opposite takes on it at home.. the missus would never go in again if she didn't have to, i imagine her returning to the office a day a week, maybe 2, she already takes the summer off anyway.

On the other hand I prefer the office, back today for the first time since Christmas as had been staying away to keep the numbers down. I do think I might start working Fridays from home though, closing the laptop and starting the weekend immediately is nice :)

What about health and safety legislation? Like employers have a duty of care to provide a safe working environment for all their workers? Would they have to do an ergonomic assessment of your home office?

We've already had that done. I had my assessment last week, albeit over MS Teams. They wanted to see my home office set up, my posture, my chair, how tidy my power cables were, my view/acesss to daylight etc. They also asked how often I give my eyes a break and get out for fresh air.

Following the call she sent an email to myself and my boss suggesting some changes and also what additional equipment I need. Work are sending me out a new office chair as a result.

Wow. That's the job. If they didn't do that you could have sued them in a few months for failing to provide you with a safe working environment.

You'd have to find a good solicitor, but I'm sure you'd have a good case. There is a very good lady who works for RDJ who specialises in this kind of thing.

Ah so this was a case of them covering their own back as much as anything else, interesting.

To be fair they've been very good. All my home working equipment has been paid for by work. Two laptops, a laptop stand, keyboard, mouse.

You could argue that they should be paying for WiFi, but I'm saving so much money by not commuting and no paying for lunch and lattes every day, that I'll take the small hit.
