Not many people know this, but the worlds greatest ever band is not some bunch of drug-addled relics from the 1960s, but Dayton Ohio’s Guided By Voices, who blazed a trail of glory over two decades or so before calling a halt to their recording career in 2004.
This came as devastating news to their many fans (who include such disparate personalities as Graham Linehan, Steven Soderbergh and recently installed White House press secretary, Jay Carney). Life goes on however, and after several years of mourning, a group of Dublin fans picked themselves up and formed Voided By Ponces.
The official mission was to recreate the messy brilliance of the live GBV experience for all those who missed out the first time around. The unofficial mission was to get together on Friday nights in a city centre fruit and veg market and drink cans while banging out GBV classics.
Voided By Ponces normally restrict themselves to these boozy rehearsals but occasionally stumble out to play private parties and select gigs. VBP have been enticed outside Dublin only once before, and this ended up involving playing at a Golf Club in Limerick.
Undeterred by this experience, the band have responded to the growing clamour of the Cork GBV-cult and will be appearing at An Realt Dearg on Saturday September 10th.
Expect to hear songs from all periods of the Guided By Voices oeuvre. If you are a GBV fan, expect to come away fully satisfied that you have saved yourself the airfare involved in flying to the states to see them on their current re-union tour. If you are not a GBV fan, expect to come away fully converted.
