On the contrary, if he had stepped aside a year ago, she probably wouldn't be the nominee. By leaving it so late, there was no other viable choice in the circumstances.

There's also the huge advantage that Trump had been incessantly lying about Biden for the last 5 years and all that has been for nothing, and he's now playing catch up on her and Walz (who has been phenomenal so far).

I wouldn't trust the US polling because they've consistently underperformed over the last decade. That said, on average they do track trends but even then it'll be mid to late September before there's a better idea of where things stand
