The Official Man Utd Thread - Part 3.

For anyone interested.
Thanks for that.

i’m not on the wum i can assure you because an accident like that is tragic but do you think there would be as much lore around the club following munich and the european cup they won after?

i had a look back how many division ones a few teams had won up to the point of the munich disaster.

you could make the same argument för liverpool by the time of hillsborough but they were utterly dominant at that stage.

who’s to say the babes wouldn’t have gone on to win all around them
too but genuinely interested in the first part of my post.

As much? No.

But it's like with every club. It's the events, the people, the landmark games that shape how each club is viewed.

They did exceptionally well to rebuild the club after the disaster and come back stronger.

Don't know tbh.

But the team with an average age of 22 had won two titles already and were gaining huge experience in Europe. Might have sropped Madrid winning 5 in a row.

Might never have won another trophy (highly unlikely). Imagine a genius like George Best being introduced to that team in its prime in 63 along with Law.

Or maybe Busby wins a couple of European cups in the late 50s, retires younger and interferes with a different manager and fucks it all up.

We don't know. The story we do have is all we know. It did gain United a lot of fans worldwide, but Liverpool also have a worldwide following as the second biggest club in England, so Utd would also have had that without Munich I'd say.

It's a bad look to stiff such a high profile team/brand as the All Blacks for relative peanuts in the context of INEOS profits & Ratcliffe's wealth.

Sports can be a cut-throat business at times, but if the All Blacks have to go to court to force INEOS to pay what they contractually agreed to pay it might make many of the people/businesses that Man Utd interact with to think twice.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ineos, meanwhile, has blamed the “deindustrialisation of Europe” for the collapse of a £22million sponsorship deal with the All Blacks that has prompted New Zealand Rugby to sue the petrochemicals company.

Only weeks after Sir Ben Ainslie threatened Ratcliffe and his firm with “significant legal action” in a dispute over team rights for the America’s Cup, the co-owner of United is now at the centre of another bitter battle involving perhaps the most iconic team in world sport.

In July 2021 Ineos signed a “unique new six-year partnership” with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) that was worth about £3.65million a year and was part of an elite sports collaboration — very much masterminded by Ratcliffe — across Formula 1, football, professional cycling, sailing, rugby and athletics. The plan was to form “a unique sport performance group”, “working together” to help “extraordinary athletes achieve extraordinary things”.

But NZR says Ineos has reneged on the agreement by failing to pay the first of the instalments due in 2025, and has now taken the appropriate legal action.

Now, in what amounts to an extraordinary statement, a company that announced gross annual profits of more than £1.2billion in 2023 is saying it asked to refinance the deal with NZR because of the present economic challenges affecting the chemicals industry. Ineos may point to a fall in profits from £2.2billion in 2022 and more than £3billion in 2021, but the commitment to NZR is obviously minuscule by comparison.

Ineos has nevertheless responded to a statement from NZR by claiming it has been making “cost-saving measures” because of the harsh trading and tax conditions in Europe.

“Ineos has greatly valued our sponsorship of New Zealand Rugby, having contributed over $30million [about £24million] to the teams in recent years,” Ineos said in a statement.

However, trading conditions for our European businesses have been severely impacted by high energy costs and extreme carbon taxes, along with much of the chemicals industry in Europe, which is struggling or shutting down. We are witnessing the deindustrialisation of Europe.

“As a result, we have had to implement cost-saving measures across the business. We sought to reach a sensible agreement with the All Blacks to adjust our sponsorship in light of these challenges.

“Unfortunately, rather than working towards a managed solution, New Zealand Rugby have chosen to pursue legal action against their sponsor. We remain in discussion with New Zealand Rugby.”

Other teams in the Ineos empire have also been affected. The Manchester offices of Ineos Grenadiers, the professional road cycling team, have been downsized and they are now looking for new naming sponsors.

It remains to be seen if there are any plans to review the Ineos involvement as a one-third shareholder of the Mercedes F1 team, but clearly these measures coincide with the realisation that the revival of the world’s most famous football club is no small task.

People don’t seem to realise that these clubs are businesses. Nonsense articles like this are total clickbait. When a company undergoes a takeover from another it’s quite normal for synergies to be sought and this usually is felt at manager or senior manager level.
