The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

Bit of a nothing game but a win is a win. You could definitely see the motivation of the players wasn’t quite as high. Slot will be disappointed to concede when up against 10 men too. Jones also tweaked his groin which isn’t ideal.

Top spot isn’t guaranteed after Barca claimed a late win but I don’t think it matters as such. The group phase in general has been a success overall but it won’t count for a whole pile come the knockouts.

Chiesa looked bright when he came on and always finds a way to work the keeper. I think he might be a decent alternative as the central striker if he can stay fit.

Doesn't matter at all. If every result goes according to plan you might get the 16th placed team rather than 15th place team in last 16 but with likes of R Madrid and PSG possibly coming in through 17th to 24th place, all a lottery anyway.
Liv should rest the core players for dead rubber game next week and give them a break that their opponents may not be able to afford.

Agree. The squad for PSV away should be a heavily rotated one and there are certain guys who shouldn't even be asked to travel (i.e. Gravenberch, VVD, Konate, Salah). It might well still be enough to secure top spot, but it's no disaster if it isn't.

Given the way the league phase has panned out, the only clear advantage at this point of finishing 1st as opposed to 2nd is financial. There's ~£8m on offer for topping the league & it would be just shy of £10m if Liverpool won the game and finished top. There may be pressure from the owners to secure that cash.

Resting heavily for PSV also allows Liverpool to be a bit more on par with Bournemouth in terms of rest time before the game on 1st Feb. Arsenal and City have both come away with nothing from that fixture this season and it could be well be among the trickier league games remaining this season for Liverpool.

Avoiding the CL play-off round also means that the rearranged Everton away can be ticked off early in the calendar year and Liverpool will be able to rest up mid-week before Man City (...who may well have a play-off game that midweek) away.

Finishing in the top 2 is good for confidence (and financially) but the real benefit is avoiding the play-off round.

Jones, Jota & Gomez all out for Ipswich and probably longer, Konate apparently playing through some pain in his knee so not ideal.
