The Official Arsenal Thread - Part 2

VAR should be a different job. You don't need to be a ref to work in VAR. You just need to know a certain set of rules and not take half a day to draw the lines (and definitely not forget to draw them in the first place).

I bet they type with their index fingers and use the mouse to press the search button.

And then the complaint will be "...who is the random guy doing VAR? He's never even been a ref!"

Being a ref is very hard.
Being a very good ref is exceptionally hard.
Being universally regarded as an outstanding ref if close to impossible
(...and where that has been the case it's often been softer things like the ref's persona that has led to that view).

The way VAR has been designed, you then need to somehow get inside the head of the ref for the big decisions - then apply a subjective overlay on the top to judge whether the ref's decision was within the bounds of reasonable decisions given the nature of the incident.

There are lots of cases where the VAR may independently think the ref made the wrong call, but isn't empowered to suggest he change his mind.

It's a hard and thankless task.

Also IIRC the actualy drawing of the lines (and timing the frame where contact is made for offside) is done not by the VAR ref, but by a more technical audio-visual person who works alongside the VAR ref.

The whole thing is a mess. The illusion of perfection, via VAR, is just not achievable.

Do I think, on the whole, we are getting more accurate big decisions? Yes I do.

Do I think - factoring in the whole VAR machine and it's impact on matchday experience - it is worth it? Hell no.

Fair comment PhilbY.

Hopefully the semi automated offside (if they ever get around to bringing it in) will improve the match day experience.

Fwiw I do think refereeing needs to be made a much more attractive career, starting from u6s and the PL has more than enough money to pay top dollar for the top refs. But also they have the money to develop them too.

All of this to the fucking max.

VAR has only heaped more spotlight on refs to make big decisions where an awful lot are big time grey area.

The ref bashing would want to stop. The sport doesn't exist without them so STFU.

There's very little chance that a human can make split-second decisions perfectly uniformly, all the time. Get over it.

The refs in PGMOL have been promoted beyond their abilities and are being exposed. The best protection refs can get is more development and training.

The current PGMOL salary is fit for maybe the 2nd division. And so are the PGMOL refs.

Pay top money for the best refs from around the world. It's mad it's the only part of the premier league that refuses to look beyond a tiny pool of talent for recruitment.
