Thanks to you and the others who have offered advice.

I've a strange and almost unique dynamic with my boss. He's extremely senior and we've nobody between us in terms of hierarchy, where as pretty much anyone else of my level would be reporting to someone closer to my own level, if that makes sense.

So he brought up shit like "you're in a privileged position to have such direct contact with someone in my position" and all kinds of shit that on reflection was absolutely insane. I was just so shook on Friday that I just kept nodding and saying yes.

I was so shook after his first call on Friday morning that I went over to the Cork office because the girlfriend was working from home and it was embarrassing. Thankfully the office was dead but even with headphones on I couldn't really reply as I wanted to as I didn't want to let on to other people that I was getting ripped apart.

Unfortunately the person who threw me under the bus is someone who I'd have counted as one of my closest friends/allies in work. I emailed him twice on Friday and got no reply. Fucking mess.

I’ve had that dynamic before. Reporting to someone too senior to you is a curse. Thankfully I got on very well with my boss but she was far too busy to provide regular feedback, coaching and mentorship.

Maybe find a way to work that into how you respond to him. He seems like a fella who likes having his ego stroked so you could approach it that you’re appreciative of how busy he is, that he’s given you great access to senior management etc but that a reporting like to a lower level manager would benefit you and enable you to receive more regular and constructive feedback.

So all I am saying is to not let it drive you into a negative spiral.

You have the evidence and presumably the internal work contacts to make it clear that a) you were not at fault and b) you are looking at solutions not repercussions.

Look after your mindset first and foremost. Then do your best work and then sort out your boss dynamic on their return

Firstly document the conversation as best as you can remember it. Secondly in my experience, a supervisor who ignores evidence and holds a potential advancement as a threat, should not be managing people. Thirdly, depending on who the other stakeholders are in this particular issue, I would circulate the state of play as you know it to be, pull them into a call, work the solution in the next 2 weeks and then take on your supervisor on their return.

Don't let the last few days rule your mindset, your day to day outlook and feed a negative narrative for the next 2 weeks. You can sort your boss when they come back, for the moment you do you and do what makes sense for you

I'm so glad I work for myself. It's freelance and the income is unpredictable, but it's a breath of fresh air that I'm still enjoying five years on.
