Speed Limits

After the recent upturn in Road Traffic Accident fatalities the Minister for State is recommending to local councils that speed limits be reduced.

The problem is some roads (see link) aren't suitable for even half the speed legally permitted on the road sign, while other good wide roads are restricted too much which can cause frustration and tempt people to break the rules.

There should be an engineering assessment of roads and not let councils do a blanket "one size fits all" in certain categories.

And any place that has had a serious accident should de facto have an investigation and would need a very sound engineering reason why the speeds should not be reduced there.

Spoke to somebody who is a rep for a tyre company, He told me gardai have told him in many cases of fatal accidents it is
vehicle defects such as brakes and tyres which are the main factor, People give out about the NCT but it is there for safety reasons,
Some people feel they can control/stop a car in an emergency, Its only when that day comes when reality hits.

No need for an engineering assessment. Common sense would dictate that speed needs to be reduced in these area.
IRA/SF would burden the taxpayers with the cosy of these surveys. They have no idea how to run a country.

This is a bit of a myth tbh, as data shows that only a small minority of accidents are the result of vehicle defects.

The most common are: (not in order)
Speed
Alcohol
Drugs
Mobile phone

Finally.

The consequences of getting pinged doing 100 on a 60 rural road might deter some people now.

What will change exactly? YOu can stick up any sign you like but there are morons who will break the limit anyway.

As for slow-going vehicles that won't get out of the way of traffic behind them some jurisdictions have laws where if you've a certain number of vehicles tailing yours because you're travelling too slowly then you're obliged to pull in and let them pass. Alas in this country not enough do that.
