This upper class right-wing political dynasty TD has done absolutely nothing for Cork since he was elected to the Dail. He has not achieved anything positive for Cork since he entered the Dail via his father's seat.
As Minister for Housing, a position many believe he only took to help him with his Fine Gael leadership ambitions, Coveney proved to be completely incompetent. For six months, he unquestioningly parroted the line that new ESB connections represented newly built houses. Later it was discovered that this was not the case and that the true figure for new builds was considerably lower. It was approximated 1/5 of what Coveney had been claiming.
Simon Coveney (FG) did more to increase rents in this country than any other politician. He introduced Rent Pressure Zones. However, against expert advice, Coveney decided to introduce a lead-in time for their introduction. This decision meant that landlords were incentivised to raise rents before the introduction of Rent Pressure Zones. This is exactly what they did. They increased rents as a direct reaction to Coveney's policy.
Rent Pressure Zones only work where they are introduced immediately. Coveney's actions meant that they led to increased rents when they were introduced. This was the exact opposite of what had been intended. This led to increased homelessness and increased poverty.
I think it no accident that former Fine Gael TD Dara 'The Man Who Wasn't There' Murphy sided with Coveney in the Fine Gael leadership contest of 2017. Perhaps he recognised a fellow spoofer? It was also clear that Fianna Fail hoped Coveney would be appointed leader of Fine Gael because they knew they could easily beat him.
In Cork Coveney's so called 'pet project' the events centre still has not been built. The site remains an empty eye-sore at the heart of the city.
If voters want to see positive meaningful developments that are delivered and well thoughtout progressive policies that help society, they need to stop voting for upper class right-wing spoofers who are the products of inherited wealth and who have no relevant life experience, no skills or abilities.
