The Vietnamese were part of the communist world which was seen as an existential threat to the US just like with Ukraine and Russia, portraying Russia as being an exitensial threat, we've seen this playbook acted out before in places like Latin America and South Africa. Russia's main war aim is the preservation of the Donbas and It's Russian speakers from Kiev misrule.
