Nice article - I know it's a great experience for them and I f**ked off for 15 years or so myself but would be devastated to see my smallies go. Many go for the experience of a lifetime with a view to returning 2-3 years later and most do come back but plenty decide that they love it wherever and decide to settle there.

Europe or even East Coast US is one thing but Oz and NZ are different level in terms of staying in touch.

I know alot of families who have kids that are mostly Australia and even our own gaa club has had 6 guys travelling last 2r3 years ..

I think younger generation just wany to see the world and while in Aus they also do alot of other countries .

The vast majority of them come home and alot have jobs like nursing that they can walk back into .
Now I also emigrated in late 80s but it was only across sea to England but back then it seemed so far away in days before mobile phones were in play ..

I had one buddy who went to USA and is still there with 2 brothers who also went nut the difference between going yrs back was it was to find work but nowadays it's more emphasis on seeing the world while picking up a job to finance it .

Yeah - despite PJ making it clear that daughter and boyfriend both had good jobs with good employers and were under no pressure to leave Ireland.
