The concept of a team manager in rowing, running and swimming doesn’t really seem understood by MSM in Ireland. Unless the manager is shouting on the sideline, the likes of RTE definitely don’t seem to rate their contribution.

In reality they have a very tricky job getting different athletes in different events all to peak simultaneously. If you add in the load they carry in running a high-performance program, then you can see the job is a major deal.

Based on World rankings and performances at the 2023 worlds, the Irish rowing team slightly underperformed in Paris. There would have been disappointment in the case of both heavyweight pairs.

John Rudd, the high-performance director at Swim Ireland should be getting some sort of award for sure. He has, over three Olympics, taken Irish swimming from pretty much rock bottom to unimagined heights. A huge team qualified for Paris and every single swimmer made at least their semi-final. That’s outstanding.

What were the allegations that stopped him getting a new contract?

Don't know to be honest but best guess is that he didn't pick certain fellas.

Rowing is a difficult one. You need a squad to find the quickest combination for the boat so you trial and test and make an often marginal call that an athlete who burst his balls for 4 years will disagree with.

As as result by necessity these fellas are often fairly autocratic types. Certainly true for Thor Nilson and Jurgen Grobbler at least
