The club were a mess in August, and their position was utterly predictable. Unless they have an absolute stone cold improvement lined up (I'll take a stab at Gary Rowett) then what's the point?

Well it couldn't really get much worse could it? They were absolute certs for relegation under Phelan even with a transfer window under his belt. Whatever belief the players had in him at start of season is now long gone.
The new guy might not save them but it's at least attempting to rescue an already bad situation. Rowett would probably be the best appointment. If he doesn't pull off a miracle survival, they've got a guy that did really well in The Championship with a fairly average squad at Birmingham.
