Kyle Hayes - a good GAA man?

Yup, its chump change to 'Ireland's' 11th richest man.

Court documents show he spent something similar on a hand of backgammon in Vegas.

On a multitude of grounds. His charitable trust can offset about a quarter of the sum against his corporation tax similarly the GAA can claim gift aid on the sum.

McManus sought to get a bit of good publicity for himself and it provoked a bit of interest in his already well publicised tax affairs. Hes paid no income tax in this country in 27 years. He gets very prickly when reporters point this out.

He can buy himself a nice stable of horses for tax purposes, the country pile and throw a few scraps to the locals and his hobbies. Good luck to him. Theres no shortage of dopes queueing up to tug the forelock for the 'great' man.
Oh Christ hank will you let it go. The vast majority of people are happy with this and in general it's a good news story. One could quibble that he's not paying enough taxes here (that's down to government policy not JP) but he still wouldn't be paying any more tax here even if he hadn't given this donation so don't be looking a gift horse in the mouth. Enjoy the ride.

As has already been said if he wanted to do so he could have insisted the money donated was kept confidential. With the big announcement this is just pure ego trip .

Tax dodgers are to be tolerated not celebrated.

Of course the slow ones in class will lap this up

I don't think it's an ego trip and I've already posted, tax write off or not, it is a very generous gesture that he was not required to make.

But it is very obviously related to what's going on with Hayes (my mistake on Gillane). The timing of it screams like a PR deflection exercise.

Its had the opposite effect anyway.

A storm of questions about how high net worth individuals are allowed avoid tax in this country.

To say its not about tax or ego is pretty naive. Those who say McManus is a private individual who stays away from the limelight are talking complete bollocks.

Hes front and centre in All Ireland day. Ffs , golfing with Tiger and Rory, real shrinking violet stuff lol.

Congratulations to the guy in his business successes but lets get real

Also, not wantng to suggest anything untoward is going on, but what is his business sucess based on? People suggest currency speculation but it's all a bit of a mystery.

From the little Ive read himself and Desmond supposedly made a sizable fortune from speculation on Mexican currency in the 80s.

Tax avoidance for the superwealthy is nothing new . Getty was the wealthiest man on the planet from his oil dealings in the middle east . He pioneered setting up a charitable foundation and galleries and museums to avail of their tax status and funnel his profits through them.

The Business post did a feature on McManus that the scholarships he doles out annually come from his uk property profits and allow him to avail of lower taxes.

Anytime Ive seen his finances under the spotlight is because hes involved in court cases to avoid tax. Be it property tax on lands zoned near his golf course or the time he sued the Nevada gaming commission to try and keep more of his winnings .

The idea hes to be lauded for giving something back when hes gone to great lengths to do the exact opposite for decades is laughable.

He didn’t announce it and it couldn’t be kept confidential as every county board publish accounts and a 1 million donation is not something that you can hide.
