John Robb was festering away in Blackpool, UK till punk rock came along and saved his life. Naively believing that you really could do what you wanted, he went on to form The Membranes, write for the rock press, do loads of TV stuff and form another band project Goldblade. He currently writes books and articles, and tours the world. Robb has appeared as a pundit on various television programmes including Channel 4's "Top 100" shows, BBC's "I Love the 60s/70s/80s/90s" series and "Seven Ages of Rock". He has contributed to BBC's "The Culture Show" as well as several appearances on TV documentaries, and on BBC radio commenting on pop culture. He has been a contributor to SKY's "The Pop Years" and co-produced and presented a ten-part series on the history of punk rock. Robb's books include a biography of The Stone Roses, "Stone Roses And The Resurrection Of British Pop"; "Punk Rock: An Oral History" (which has been translated into several different languages); "Death To Trad Rock", an account of the 80s UK DIY underground scene.

Robb has worked as a journalist for many years and was a regular freelance contributor to Sounds in the late 80s, as well as writing for the Melody Maker. He also writes for The Sunday Times, The Observer, The Guardian, The Independent and several websites. While working for Sounds, Robb was the first journalist to interview Nirvana (in 1989), and also later coined the word "Britpop". In 2011, Robb launched an online rock music and pop culture magazine/blog called "Louder Than War", focusing on arts news, reviews, and features.

John Robb appears at Prim's Bookshop in Kinsale (Co. Cork) on Sat 3rd June 2023 with a new spoken word show, promoting his new book 'The Art of Darkness-The History of Goth' (Louder Than War Books). Tickets (limited) now on sale (shop/instagram) from Prim's Bookshop (check their facebook for updates). This will be part of a short Irish tour and will be the only Cork show.

This is the first comprehensive history of Goth music and culture. Over 600 pages, John Robb explores the origins and legacy of this enduring scene, which has its roots in the post-punk era. Drawing on his own experience as a musician and journalist, Robb covers the style, the music and the clubs that spawned the culture, alongside political and social conditions. He also reaches back farther to key historic events and movements that frame the ideas of Goth, from the fall of Rome to Lord Byron and the Romantic poets, European folk tales, Gothic art and the occult. Finally, he considers the current mainstream Goth of Instagram influencers, film, literature and music. The Art of Darkness features interviews with Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Damned, Nick Cave, Southern Death Cult, Einstürzende Neubauten, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Throbbing Gristle, Danielle Dax, Lydia Lunch and many more. It offers a first-hand account of being there at the gigs and clubs that made the scene happen.
