Israel attacks Iran!

🤔
There was a Mayor of Cork called Gerald Goldberg. He had a firm of solicitors. Not sure if he's related to David Marcus though Slova.

Lee it appears you are correct, Goldberg’s father was met on the Quays by a Marcus welcoming arriving Jews., so they were just acquaintances.

Also Fred Rosehill took over the Marcus business in the 1960s and the daughter Catherine still runs it.

There is a good video but sad with Fred Rosehill in the link.

There's a really good documentary on Goldberg called A Corkman, A Jew and an Irishman. I think that's the title and really worth watching. I remember him talking to us in school one time where he discussed the Limerick pogrom and he was still upset about it all those years later. I think some of his family had to flee after being attacked in Limerick and he could never forgive.
Marcus's book is fictional but a lovely account of Jews in Cork during the War of Independence.
When you look at the history of Cork it's something to be proud of the way we gave sanctuary to so many different cultures over the years and how in many respects due to our physical location we always had that interaction with Europe and the outside world generally. It's very unique in Irish terms that interaction.

A bit off topic but anyway....

Very good clip, thank you for sharing.

It is good that the Pogroms of Russia and Limerick have come to light as the general perception is that only the Nazis were anti-semites,revisionism of history is a sad fact of the society we live in today.

Interesting about Sinn Fein being Anti-semites a century ago.

🤔
There used to be another well-known Jewish family in Cork. Sher was their surname afaicr.
Anyone know anything about them?

Could not find anything with a google search, likely they left with the others to New York or The homeland. I guess searching the archives like deaths births marriages would turn something up. The exhibition they had in the Crawford gallery must have something on this family.

🤔
I don't remember Clein. Maybe I've spelt "Sher" incorrectly though.

There is few Sherowitz and many Cleins on this site.

Interesting that I saw on another site that many Jews fought for the IRA in the War Of Independence.
