He was. But he broke a promise on it. Lambasted Batt O’Keeffe as Education Minister and then continued his policies.

What would you rather have, an educated workforce, or the best universities in the world?

I don't think we need an Oxbridge to run the country successfully.

Bang for buck, I think we do a lot better than the likes of the UK, and we don't saddle people with a mortgage for every arts degree.

He was difficult to work with and widely disliked. He could have done a lot more good if he didn't piss people off with his attitude.
