Politic
The same politicians also whip up locals into a frenzy in the community about the lack of available housing.
The locals are objecting against their own best interests for votes of course.
If you cannot even fill out a form to make an observation on a planning application then you have bigger problems.
The system even worked for your own interests.
Local politicians whip up locals into a frenzy in the community if anything new is to be built and especially housing in their area. When people talk about NIMBYISM and all that, the reason "wealthy" areas appear to object to stuff whereas working class areas don't is nothing to do with working class people being more accepting or open minded. It literally boils down to people's education level in an area and their ability to understand how the system works. And by system I don't mean it in the Mick Barry/Tommy Gould-esque "system versus the people" way, I mean the actual planning process, how it is set up and more broadly speaking how democracy actually works and how you can have a legitimate say and make a legitimate point about a planning application that will be considered.
Some uneducated working class person who left school at 14, generally speaking, isn't going to have the ability to sit down and write an well-thought out letter or an email outlining their objections. They might struggle to view planning applications online, download the planning objection form, fill it out, print it or email it to the relevant local authority. It's beyond many people's capacities. It's much easier to just bitch about it and say that the pollyATihsuNS nEvEr do ANYting for US. Or to go out and burn a bus.
I objected to a neighbour building something absolutely ludicrous years ago and I thought I'd be wasting my time contacting the council about it and join the rest of my neighbours just bitching about it. It was really satisfying in the end because I felt justice was done and that the council listened to what I was saying. The stupid cunt even appealed to Bord Pleanála and lost and it cost him an absolute fortune to undo the two fingers he gave to the community and to the council.
The same happens with builders both big and small. They know that the chances of somebody filling out an application and having to spend their valuable time engaging in the democratic planning process is very low. You can get away with loads because people couldn't be arsed going anything about their objections or even if they wanted to, they don't know where to start.
