Free legal aid, the biggest scandal in Ireland ?

a solicitor friend of mine at a wedding in Kerry last year received a phone call from the gaurds saying one of his free legal aid clients needed him at a station, this was just as we were sitting down for the meal. He left and drove back to Cork to meet this repeat offender and on returning late that night he said to me that he had to go because the prisoner in question was, and I quote "worth too much to him"

I know there's a framework of fees, it's the lack of competition is the issue and it should be addressed. Volume fees are tendered all of the time in the private sector and they get over all of the stumbling blocks you will mention. Some of the fees paid are outrageous like the fee to the SCs in the Seanie Fitz case for instance. Surely something like that should be tendered? €400k is bananas

Was not the issue here that the state agreed to pay their own team over and above the normal rate, and Seanies' defense team lucked out because of some requirement that they be paid the same rates as the prosecutors for the DPP.

Someone had the article up, think it was Paschal Donoghue who sanctioned the increase in fees. Blame that idiot for the above.

Senior counsel for the prosecution and defence were paid €3,000 each a day by the State for the 126-day trial which was the longest in Irish legal history. This is more than three times more than the standard rate of €858 a day for senior counsel in Circuit Court criminal trials.
The senior barristers were also paid a €40,000 initial “brief fee” to take the case, vastly more than the normal brief fee of €1,716.

To a solicitor who does criminal legal aid that makes sense. Let's say the guy had been arrested for a serious offence, the solicitor who attends the cards station will most likely be the solicitor who gets the case. That could be worth 20k. Pain to have to leave a wedding to secure the thing but good business sense.

Not sure what you see as the issue with It?

Typo.

Meant "eh?".b is just below h on the keyboard.

Why is "eb" offensive to you? Is it legal latin shorthand for something?

Initials of a criminal solicitor in Cork. I thought you were asking him to comment on who it was, which I wouldn't consider fair.

Mind you, eh doesn't really make sense as a response to that post...
