"Is his character worthy of emulation?"

What are you on about? I don't think Ethan is supposed to be a sympathetic character....but it wouldn't have made much of a film if everyone was going around hugging each other and trying to promote peace on earth....
For instance would you consider the Lee Van Cleef character in Good bad and ugly worthy of emulation? Most cowboy films need bad guys...even if it's not that clear who's what.

He's the hero of the piece as far as I can see, not an anti-hero or bad guy. Van Cleef is a baddie, simple as.
