European Athletics Championships

Even though Derval has retired, this is as good an Irish team as we've had in a while. Barr (400m hurdles), English (800m), O'Lionaird (1500m), Britton(10,000m and marathon) and Heffernan (50km walk) all travel with hopes of making an impact at the business end of the tournament. Some of the men's marathon team (principally Pollock and Hehir) would also have top 10 hopes.

Action kicked off in Zurich this morning:

  • Thomas Barr won his heat to make the 400m hurdles semis
  • Brian Gregan and Richard Morrissey both into 400m semis
  • Amy Foster into 100m semi
  • However, Sarah Lavin and Jason Harvey did not progress in the 100m hurdles and 400 hurdles.
  • Mark English (800m semi) and Fionnuala Britton (10,000m final) in action later today

Be interesting to see if Britton goes all out in the 10,000m with the marathon to run on Sunday.

Irish athletes consistently do well in international competition - here's hoping some of the new generation can deliver on their early-season promise
