De Event Centre

Near shops, restaurants, hotels, pubs, bus routes and multi-storey car parks, taxi ranks and walkable from many parts of the city is bad alright.

Horgans Quay is near shops, restaurants, hotels, pubs, bus routes, multiple car parks, taxi ranks, and railway station, and walkable from many parts of the city. If you were from Cork City you'd actually know that you epic failure.

They are not building and planning all those new hotels in the city without a huge draw like an Event Centre.
The old Point Depot /03 Arena down the docks in Dublin is a pain in the arse.

More importantly the rejuvenation of the Barrack St and Douglas Street areas could be a game changer and even more important long-term for urban renewal than any Event Centre as these neighborhood's in the city have been overlooked and ignored for too long.

The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff is in a great location and you can walk everywhere before and afterwards.

Yes, and since BAM were redeveloping the old Tax Office site into a hotel, until Covid put it on ice, I had suspected he would have wanted that done before starting the Event Centre.

'Building work is expected to start on the project some time in the last three months of this year'

Lol, you'd swear it was the third secret of Fatima not the start of a build.

Is there anything to be said for another sod turning?

Speaking from a pure logistics point of view and not bars/ restaurants etc, The Principality Stadium has a direct slip road off a primary A route (actually think it's called Lansdowne Road, funny enough) for the big trucks to gain direct access in and out of the stadium.
A full traffic management plan was submitted proving that access for large trucks etc was feasible on the one way South Main street and all agreed with Transport Infrastructure Ireland. and City Hall

The former brewery had 200 HGV truck movements per week.

That's a nonsense comment. Horgan's Quay is already being developed, however across the river on Albert's Quay (where O'Callaghan bid for the Event Centre and is now redeveloped anyway), would have been a massive traffic nightmare as it is a major artery through the city. Above all, it would have brought little revenue into the city centre, or certainly nothing close to what it could, as it would bring driving to the venue back in as a possibility.

Calm down, m8. I'm just referencing the absence of machinery to highlight the amount of time that has elapsed since Coveney's pre-election stunt. In the mean time, they've built a massive apartment complex and moved on to the next job, yet no sign of anything happening on the ground. It's a stark image.
They move their machinery to other sites like Horgans Quay?

Jeez, what an eyesore currently.

The logistics of getting big artic trucks for events in and around South Main Street would be a nightmare and cause huge traffic snarlups. That's why there was talk of there needing to be another bridge coming at the site from the rear by Crosse's Green. Such a bridge would naturally add hugely to the costs.

Horgan's Quay for example wouldn't have such logistical issues and would have main station nearby. Could even have a stop on the suburban rail to cater for the even centre for punters using the line that's supposed to be linking Cobh to Mallow with suburban rail.

Might even see the likes of the KLM, The Olympia, The Ferryman(?) re-emerge Phoenix like.

The old Beamish and Crawford site was already being developed. Are you seriously suggesting the entirety of Horgans Quay will be fully developed and there'd be no room for an Event Centre or anything else

The Tunnel had one of them as well, how did that work out? ;) I don't have an issue with it's location but comparing it Principality Stadium is not an accurate comparison purely from a logistics pov.

The brewery had 200+ HGV's a week moving in and out and they arrive very early in the morning and leave after midnight anyway.

There are 2 new pedestrian bridges going in.

The suburban rail does not serve all of the city and Horgans Quay is well away from pubs and restaurants etc and the city sustainable city policy would not allow for all the car dependent driving and parking anyway.

Horgans quay will be all offices and apartments anyway as far as I know.

Trying to resuscitate 3 old dead pubs to serve 6,000 punters is just farcical while the E.C. being in the middle of the city is already accessible and near hospitality etc.
