BusConnects is a name designed to distract attention from the fact that it is primarily a cycle lane scheme - featuring 112km cycle lanes but only 93km of bus lanes. So basically people are losing their gardens and there will be massive upheaval to facilitate the private commuting choice of the tiny minority for whom cycling is a workable mode of transport.
What's especially galling is the spectacular waste of money on cyclists this scheme brings. The overall cost is €600 million. No breakdown is given but if we very conservatively estimate the cycling lane component of this at 20% that's €120 million. And to what end? The plan's stated aim is to increase the numbers cycling by one third*. According to the CSO the numbers commuting by cycling in Cork city and suburbs is ~2300. So they want to spend €120 million to attract an extra ~800 cyclists. That's €150,000 per cyclist. Insane! I contrast they want to triple the numbers using public transport - a far more laudable goal, and at a cost of ~€16000 per user - still huge waste of money if you ask me, but an order of magnitude less than cyclists, most of whom won't actually appear and will probably still use the road if they do.
*They've been sneaky about this. They haven't given a specific target for cyclists - instead they're looking to increase numbers "walking and cycling" by a third. As such, when all these cyclists fail to materialize they can just hide the figures with those walking.
