Cork Minor Football 2024

JBS

You accuse me of moving goalposts but your rant on 'years' is now down to 12 months which is likely correct. Yet out of 7 players looked at 2 make the panel by more than likely proving themselves on the training pitch above guys who failed earlier in the championship is a big issue with you.

There have been similar mess ups in the past. I was one of the first to highlight the mess of appointing John Meyler to the Cork minor hurling job and was met with fairly strong resistance on here by at least one poster.

How about the 2 respective minor managers who called the dual players involved one particular year about 12/13 years back for a one by one interview and told them to choose hurling or football. After about 12 players made their decision and the count at approx. 7 for hurling and 3 for football one player walked in and when asked to decide he refused. The player stated he was making his services available for both codes and it was up to the respective managements to decide so they let him play both codes. When the players who made a decision on one or the other heard what occurred they were sick but admired that player as I did for sticking to his guns.

Just shows there were mess ups then and mess ups now and no doubt they will continue, I've no idea of your club or who is your club delegate but generally they are meek in dealing with the county board which is why mess ups occur and why the best players in Cork don't get on Cork teams a lot of the time.

Do you mind me asking are those 12 players still playing and if so what codes did they end up playing. I think it would be interesting to get some longitudinal info on the dual player situation to inform things going forward.

Under the rebel og model, when dual players are 15 they are asked to choose which sport they want to pursue. It’s my understanding that Myler looked for that decision even earlier, but I might be incorrect on that.
It’s no longer possible for a player to commit to the modern demands of both codes in the rebel og model. Such are the demands of that one sport on these players as county minors they dont even play either code with their club until the Cork team are knocked out.

A 16 year old Cork hurler does not play football with Cork. He doesn’t do it in the minor year either. That’s 2 years. Most won’t have done at age 15 either.
Some Cork minor hurlers this year, who are fine footballers also, gave up football totally 2 years ago to focus on the small ball.

This selection model is also being done to deal with a problem that Cork had for years where some of the better underage footballers would end up just playing hurling at adult inter county.

You stated I was wrong and then when proven you are factually incorrect stated I moved the goalposts whereas you are really only digging a bigger hole.

I'd really like to see a copy of the model you are referring. You are a stickler for rules, safeguards and models but all these things are based on who you are and who you know in our society and it's the same within the GAA. I mentioned this to you before when you were quoting the rule book on Parish rule but to no avail. The reference to the selection model is even more farcical, Cork teams need good selectors not a model drawn up by some guy in an office.

I already mentioned that Fraggie Murphy as Cork minor hurling manager allowed dual players in 2023 and John Meyler in the same job did not in 2024. If there's a Rebel Og model as you state why do you think Fraggie and his management did not comply? The reality is that it's left up to managements in respective years. Bear in mind the factual evidence this time which is that Oir O'Callaghan (Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels) and David O'Leary (Ballincollig) played championship with Cork minor hurlers and footballers in 2023, they did all the way up from U-14.

Although the GAA attempt to shirk responsibility on many issues they have an obligation to accommodate players playing both codes as both sports come under the same organisation. This is one reason why draws have been fixed for years and I have numerously referred to the Marty Morrissey cock-up on National TV in 2008 where the draw had to be fixed for Stephen Lucy to play both codes in the AI series that year, the GAA can deny this all they want but the draws were fixed for years before then and are still being fixed.

Haulie O'Sullivan is doing likewise to Fraggie but John Meyler ruled with an iron hand. I believe Meyler has no right to rule, his job is to manage. Players and Parents should be the decision makers here not the managers. When Fraggie was U-16 manager in 2022 Sean Og was one of the selectors and I mentioned it to him at the time after a match. He stated the players can play both for now underage with development key and they will come to their own decisions all in good time. That management practiced what Sean Og preached into 2023 when they were over the Cork minor hurlers. I agree with this philosophy and this is why I believe that Fraggie and Haulie did the right thing over Meyler.

I don't know if it was exactly 12 players, it could also be 9, 10 or 11 but the player who put the onus on the respective managers was smart & brave and IMO had the right outlook. What I forgot to say is that the managers contacted his father dictating to get his son to change his mind and the father backed his son before the managers let him play both codes. AFAIK the player in question is now playing hurling only.

is Haulie o Sullivan’s term finished after today? Very disappointed with the level of minor team we had this year. Were the right players picked? Was the coaching anywhere near up to standard. Answer likely no for both.
