Get a credit card. Then set up a direct debit to clear the entire amount owing on it every month. Then use it for all transactions. That way the merchant (shop/pub/restaurant) pays for each transaction and you get it for free. If you use a debit card you pay for each transaction.

Exactly. But if you sign up for a rewards card you’ll make that up in cash back. No way to do that on a debit card.

If we all took that course of action, the transaction fee would be passed on in full to the customer and the bank still pockets the fee. Using cash means that neither the customer nor the shop pays a fee.

Indeed. A cafe thinks it's really 'cool ' to go cashless and next thing it's neighbours go bust as the large retailers take their custom and then there are no customers on the street to buy the fancy coffees.

A meteor strikes the earth with meaningful impact very infrequently. Broadband shutting down is a regular occurrence. In short, not a very good point.
