“Wind is coming from the east today.

So its probably the sirens at the Port in Ringaskiddy/Haulbowline. Goes off fairly frequently, but since winds predominantly come from the southwest/west in Cork, you often don't hear the siren in the City.

I moved near the harbour a few years back and it freaked me out the first time hearing it.”

I was in the Metropole one night after a gig and that noise was going off all night. I got no sleep. It was torture. It definitely came from the Port
