The plank was 100% a euphemism for a stretcher. From my memory, Cormac Cotter was the butt of many jokes early in his career but turned out to be quite a cult hero and a reasonably decent player in the end. The plank reference was nothing to do with him.

Worked with Paddy Shortt,he was a butcher in Togher VG
I was only 13 but remember him as good craic,and despite our young ages he included us in a bit of Celtic/ Hibs banter
Myself and Philip O Sullivan,it was Paddy that got home into butchering,
Now all these years later Philip is head butcher down in Super valu Carrigaline
