Lay of the Land will be returning to Brow Head from the 16-19th May for it's third iteration of Tombolo. Six artists will spend two weeks in residency on the headland. They will develop and create artworks that respond directly to the landscape, history and heritage of the area. The residency will culminate in a four-day exhibition and will be open to the public daily from noon on Thursday 16th, to dusk on Sunday 19th of May.
LOTL produce powerful, imaginative and considered projects that take artists to a profound level of engagement with our wild places. They support artists who primarily focus on landscape, whose themes of environment, community, heritage and collaboration are intrinsic to, and reflected in their work, and who share their concepts with the local community.
LOTL residencies give artists the chance to create in an environment free from traditional expectations, unlocking the potential for new work to emerge. Inherent in the work is a kind of surrender to geographical context, which releases the artists from their usual axis of practice, and opens
up whole unexplored regions of expression and creativity. This residency provides the artists with the time and financial support to develop new ideas and approaches. The work produced captures the essence of what it means to be immersed in “Tírdhreach na hÉireann”.
A number of additional activities will be programmed into the weekend. An immersive exhibition tour will take place daily, lead by the participating artists and a local historian. Lay of the Land will host a series of creative workshops where audience members can try their hand at printmaking and weaving all while learning about sustainable art practices. The Cowshed will be transformed into a venue with music and food programmed for the Saturday night. Revel Coffee and The Market Kitchen will be on site serving up delicious locally sourced food & coffee all weekend!
Admission is by donation. Tombolo is supported by the Arts Council, Cork County Council and by the generous donations by supporters of the arts. For more info please visit www.layoftheland.ie
