'System Check' Virus / Trojan

had a problem with a virus/malware called 'system check' that made the pc look as if the hard disk had problems and kept giving me a series of 'bogus' error messages

managed to clear/get rid of the 'system check' problem with trojan killer and I have microsoft security essentials on my pc

everything appears to be ok now, except for the following:-

I have a WD (Western Digital) external hard disk/drive but since I had the virus problem I can't view any folders/files on the external disk. The files must still be there as I had my iTunes folder amongst a lot of other stuff on that drive and iTunes still works and is able to find the files on that external drive

Any tips, I looked on the WD site and followed their tips but it hasn't worked unless I missed something. I have Windows Vista Home Basic on the laptop

Why do you think MSE is garbage? It has caught several things for me and you don't even notice it's running.

it'll catch minor stuff is all... look at the size of the thing - most AV products have a minimum size of over 40megs now that need to be updated on almost a daily basis..

mse around 15-20megs in size and only properly updated when you request it or when M$ put out there monthly update...

Not true. I work especially with av's and MSE is right up there and is'nt hogging your system. I agree with smeegle that avast is good but MSE is well up there.

System Check often comes with a rootkit and recently a MBR rootkit, No anti-virus or MBAM will touch it. You need specialist tools for that job, so keep an eye on your system and watch especially for search redirects in your browsers.

Avast is reasonably good for killing rootkits due to it's on demand boot scanner (about the only way ye'll kill roots properly)

but your saying that a 16mb program that is only really properly updated once a month at official M$ update release is going to do a better job than a 60+ MB tool which is updated as and when required generally 2 to 3 times a day in some cases...

mse may not hog the system, at the size it is I wouldn't expect it to and is ok for catching pretty minor stuff but as for anything else it's about as much good as Norton or McAfee...

I think your confusing mse with windows defender or live onecare. MSE gets updated daily. Avast actually have a good rootkit scanner but its not incorporated into its av as its too dangerous. Any mistake and your computer is a brick.

Rootkit tools. (one would want to be careful using all these tools)
