Cork Limerick Motorway

Simey was a sitting minister for the last 6 years and has done the square root of f**k all for Cork. Howlin was in the minority govt party but he saw after the oiks down there. It's long overdue that Cork get some of the redistributed moneys - our county accounts for more than 10% of the population, is the second city, has a huge natural harbour etc etc. But our politicians are about as useful as a chocolate kettle

If I had a billion euros to spend on the two cities I'm not sure that I'd blow it all on this. What exactly will it deliver? A journey time saving of??? 14 minutes?

I'm not saying it's not a project worth pursuing. But it's not a game changer really.... Is it? How about 700 million for Cork and 300 million for Limerick on massive public transport systems WITHIN the two cities? Now that's something that will improve those cities, radically.

Fine Gael*Senator*Jerry Buttimer*has welcomed confirmation by Taoiseach*Leo Varadkar*that the Government is committed to the building of the Cork-Limerickmotorway over the coming years to complete the Atlantic Corridor running from Galway to*Cork.

Speaking in advance of the opening of the new N17/N18*Tuam*to*Gort*motorway, Mr Varadkar said in a video posted on Twitter on Wednesday it was important that*Irelandcontinued to develop motorways linking cities such as Cork, Limerick and Galway so that all roads “do not lead to Dublin.”

“It’s part of a future Atlantic Corridor which is going to link the entire western seaboard so with this in place we are now going to have a motorway linking Galway to Clare and onto Limerick and in due course we will link Limerick to Cork as well,” he said.

Mr Varadkar said the government would before Christmas set out its 10 year capital plan for infrastructure leading to speculation that the long promised Cork-Limerick motorway linking the second and third cities of the state is set for inclusion in it.

Cork based Senator Buttimer warmly welcomed Mr Varadkar’s comments as indicating the government’s commitment to delivering on the motorway which was last costed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) as requiring an investment by the Government of around €850 million.

“I very much welcome the positivity of the Taoiseach’s comments about the Cork-Limerick motorway and certainly it needs to be included in the Capital Development Plan which will be published in the coming weeks,” he said.

“It’s a vital piece of infrastructure that hasn’t been delivered yet and its importance to Cork in terms of linking it to the western seaboard can’t be overstated ... and we need to see it started and delivered now as quickly as possible,” he added.

Senator Buttimer said that it addition to the economic benefits it would generate for both Cork and Limerick in terms of reduced travel times, there was also the added benefit it would bring in terms of improved road safety as the existing N20 had seen some terrible tragedy in terms of road deaths.

“Motorways are generally seen as making for much safer road travel and given the number of fatalities that we have seen on the Cork-Mallow and Cork-Limerick road over the years from a human perspective, completing the M20 will be a major improvement for all road users.”

Prior to the economic downturn TheNational Roads Authority, now part of TII, had looked at a number of routes for the M20 depending on whether they went east or west of Mallow,*Buttevant*and*Charlevillein Co Cork, with all options going west ofCroom*in Co Limerick.

The selected route submitted for planning, east of Mallow and Buttevant but west of Charleville, would have required the compulsory purchase of 16 residences and a total of 905 hectares affecting 235 farms and approximately 247 other properties.

The motorway along this route would have involved the construction of 44 new road bridges, eight major river bridges, a number of smaller water crossings and two railway crossings, as well as 64km of local roads including national, regional, local and private-access roads.

The motorway would extend for about 80km from the junction with the proposed Cork northern ring road near Blarney outside Cork city to the junction with the N21 at Attyflynn in Co Limerick and it would cut the travel time between Attyflynn and Blarney from 61 minutes to 45 minutes

Far more important than a saving of 14 minutes, it will save lives. The very idea of cars making right turns off the present road is mad as is cars sharing roadspace with slow moving tractors.

Exactly. Also, 14 minutes saving may apply at 4am. During working hours you'd save 14 minutes getting through Charleville alone.

I'd just like to point out that there was a very severe financial crisis in this country from 2007-2013/4.

It caused huge curtailment of all major capital spending because the country was broke and nearly 16% of the population was unemployed.

I said i'd through that in there as a reminder because it seems virtually all of you have forgotten, which is strange because you were all REALLY pissed off about it at the time.

Anyway, I'm glad its over and we can build motorways again to bate the band.

The huge economic crisis caused by Benchmarking Bertie throwing billions from a one off construction bubble at current spending. If he'd allocated the extra money to non recurring capital spend, he'd have saved the country a lot of grief.
But of course in terms of votebuying, giving state employees a big fat wage increase more effective than long lasting infrastructure improvements.

Limerick is just over 100km from Cork City.

Currently the journey takes approx 90 minutes, which is an average of 66kmph.

If you were driving a constant of 120kmph
then it would take you 50 minutes.

That's a 40 minute saving*

*Please feel free to double check my calculations as I'm working from my phone calc.

Which is more important for Cork, the motorway to Limerick? Or the North Ring Road?

Both will be done at some stage but which should be done first? I am going with North Ring Road!!!
