Cork Hurlers - Part 2

Do we still think Joyce is our 6 for the next decade? Pair him with B Roche and release him to the middle of the pitch. There’s your 2 gods of war. Get Eoin Downey out to 6 and E Roche at FB.

Clare had reeled our 7 point lead in thought in the five minutes before the red card. Ironically we might have been better off if Sean O’Donoghue had missed that block and we’d gone a goal down but kept 15 men on the field rather than keeping it out and conceding a goal to an overload a couple of minutes later. Either way yesterday is only one data point. Look at the scores conceded in the last 5 championship matches.

2-25
2-22
3-25
2-25
3-26

An average of 32.2. There are plenty of individual backs who have done well in that time but there’s more to defending than that. It’s about how you defend as a unit from 1-15, how you mind possession, how you set up for puckouts and other transitions. It’s not even like you’d look at teams conceding big scores and scoring big and saying “oh well you can’t win a championship like that it’s unsustainable” we can’t win a fucking match.
That's amazingly consistent 🫣
But that's a small sample size and you created an arbitrary cut-off to exclude the Waterford game last year where we conceded just 18 points.

Also it would be useful to see how it compares to other teams and their records.

Given that we drew 1, and lost the rest by no more than 3 points, suggests that the defences that we encountered also had their own issues.

Yes in theory
Need Tipp to b eat Waterford
Limerick to beat Waterford
Clare to beat Waterford
Clare to beat Tipp
Cork beat Tipp

Very unlikely serious of results but you never know
That's assuming we lose to Limerick

Tipp to beat Waterford most unlikely in the above series. If Tipp do win, the other games may go as above and put us in the frame.

TBH, beating Limerick unlikely to make much of a a difference unless Limerick lose to Waterford too and we may go through on head to head v Limerick.

If we beat Limerick and Tipp and Limerick beat Waterford it'd put us on head to head basis v Clare or Waterford.

Clutching at permutation straws before end of April!!

I don't know if it matters or makes any difference but the average age of the Clare team is a full two years older than Cork based on the starting fifteen of both teams yesterday.(going by year of birth)
Clare also have 7 players 30 or older on the team Cork have 2.

In part it does explain that building a team takes time and building physicality takes time.
