Wolf Creek is an Australian horror film. It was released in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland on 16 September 2005 and on 3 November 2005 in Australia (apart from the Northern Territory - see below), December 25, 2005 in the United States.

Wolf Creek was marketed as being "based on true events". Although the producers have not disclosed which incidents inspired the film, some media sources have speculated that it may have been based on the backpacker murders of 1989-92, the Peter Falconio disappearance of 2001, and/or the 1992-99 Snowtown murders. The similarities of the film with the Falconio case led the defence team of the man charged (later convicted) with his murder, Bradley John Murdoch, to obtain a court order preventing Wolf Creek's release in the Northern Territory during the trial. The film's director and writer has stated that Wolf Creek is not based on any single event.[1]

The film, by first-time director Greg McLean (who also wrote the script and produced it), stars Cassandra Magrath as Liz Hunter, Kestie Morassi as Kristy Earl, John Jarratt as Mick Taylor, and Nathan Phillips as Ben Mitchell. It was nominated for the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in the category "World Cinema, Dramatic".

Wolf Creek opened on 151 screens around Australia and took AU$1.225 million in its first weekend, making it the number one film for the weekend. The film grossed over £1,500,000 in the UK, an impressive return for a low-budget horror film. It has taken an equally impressive $13,000,000 in the US so far.

The "Wolf Creek" of the title is a meteorite crater, in reality spelt "Wolfe Creek", in northern Western Australia.
