A break from the fiction. A collection of essays by scientists on, nothing. Or mostly what we think as nothing is actually something. From Physics to astrophysics to medicine, maths etc. Some of the maths and physics went over my head but one of the essays had a great title: Boringology - a happy tedium. Of course the science changes quickly and becomes a bit dated (this was published in 2013).

Back to the fiction.

Ultra Processed people by Chris van Tulleken, about food that is so processed you'd wonder if it's food anymore. Interesting and a little bit alarming tbh.
This book (if the author is correct) is mind blowing.

A few things,

Exercise, while being very good for us is virtually useless for weight loss.

Obesity is a disease in the same way cancer is, and it's the ultra processed foods which is the main cause of this.

Office workers burn much the same calories per day as someone working on a building site (our bodies compensate for the extra calories we burn being active by reducing the calories we burn while resting!!)

And as the great google in the sky is constantly watching me, and caring about what I consume, this pops up in my you tube feed tonight

I'd advise everyone to read this book, especially if you have kids and want to stop them over eating

Nice one for the heads up on this. Sounded interesting so I had a look - picked it up on Amazon's 2 for £9 deal just now. (y)

The PRoC can be a great place, rarely - but it happens. Picked up and enjoyed several books from this thread.

Not got there yet. Looking forward to it. Hadn’t realised all the politics around it tbh

Edit: Yeah, just checked, it’s by Tom Daly. Hardcover for 1€ - great holiday read

This is my current reading, the children head off on a holiday with 2 horse drawn caravans and pwn some bad guys along the way.

The Amendments - Niamh Mulvey. It had the bones of a good novel, but it used a device where it shoehorned in events from the characters lives around the various abortion amendment referenda. It didn't work for me, and I felt it took from the novel as a whole 5/10

Someone knows- Michelle McDonagh. Crime fiction, a bit ridiculous but enjoyable all the same. 6/10

Exhibit- RO Qwon. Beautifully written, but for whatever reason I found myself not really caring about any of the characters. Has some lesbian S&M, which may sell it for some folks! 6/10

Just started Claire Keegan's "Antarctica". Too early to tell.
