It's all very Brexit-y. It's obviously a bad idea, all the actual competent experts agree it's a bad idea and it's led by a bunch of absolute charlatans and grifters.
The supposedly anti-establishment billionaires and millionaires push the message that it's all the fault of the immigrants and leftists. No real solutions, just grand, undeliverable pronouncements.

And people listen.

We are in a post-truth counter factual U.S.A. now (See also the U.K.'s self-implosion).

Just throw enough crap out there like Goebbels did in 1930's Nazi Germany and just get all the suckers on board.

If this is what they really want then they are going to have to deal with 4 more years of a complete nutcase in charge.

Letting Russia win in Europe and the U.S. potentially leaving NATO would be great fun alright.

The fact that the race is even so close at this stage is mad enough as it is.

It'd be an absolute disaster for the US's tech industry.

There's already a fairly big push for the EU to decouple from China and to a lesser degree, the US. If it happened, there would probably be a big push to decouple from the US's tech industry too. Can't have the EU dependent on companies that are controlled by a deeply untrustworthy government.

And if people don't think those conversations aren't underway already, they don't really understand corporates and how they think.
