The Official Liverpool Thread - Part 2

Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are set to appoint Benfica technical director Pedro Marques in their new-look football structure.

The Athletic reported last month that Marques will be employed by the Boston-based company rather than Liverpool as they seek to utilise his expertise to attract global talent.

Marques is known to Liverpool following the club’s deal to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica in the summer of 2022 and he has ties to former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward.

The Portuguese was formerly a first team performance analyst position at Manchester City, when Ward was a scout at the club. Marques later switched to a coaching and analysis lead post for City Football Group (CFG) — the multi-club model that owns or has shares in Manchester City, Girona, Melbourne City and eight other teams around the world.

Marques spent six years working at Sporting Lisbon working across coaching, performance analysis and recruitment prior to joining City in 2010. After eight years, he returned to Portugal as Benfica’s youth technical director.

The arrival of Marques follows the return of Michael Edwards to FSG in a CEO of football role, where he takes oversight of football operations, while Richard Hughes will become the new sporting director at Liverpool from the end of the season.

The return of Edwards at FSG and Liverpool’s appointment of Bournemouth’s technical director Hughes comes amid significant off-field change at Anfield, following confirmation in January that manager Jurgen Klopp is leaving the club at the end of the season.

Further hints that Amorim is the main target but Barcelona are also said to be highly interested. Barca may not be doing well but they’re higher up on the list for most European managers than managing in England.

I do think De Zerbi would be a decent option if it came to it. The list of candidates all come with high levels of risk.
